Top names in the South African entertainment industry, delicious food and great company set the tone for the Ready Steady Wok cookout held at Simply Asia in Parktown, Johannesburg.

The event, hosted by the national Thai dining franchise on 29 March 2017, was the last semi-final event in a series of celebrity cook-offs, to be followed by the crowning of a local celebrity as the Ultimate Wok Star. Wednesday’s event saw 947 radio presenter Jacob Moshokoa battle it out against Muvhango’s Innocentia Makapila in front of a live audience to claim the honour of best Thai cooking skills.

Each contestant was tasked with making two dishes from the Simply Asia menu, the 314 (also known the Khao Phad Thai, a scrumptious Thai fried rice dish with beef) and 514 (the Ba-Mee Prik Phao, a fiery roasted chilli paste and cashew nut noodle dish with chicken). They were encouraged and supported by actor and performing artist Warren Le Grange who acted as MC for the event.

The competition was fierce, but in the end Makapila walked away with the prize and impressed the judging panel with her exceptional understanding of Thai cooking. Ravenesh Subroyal, who was part of the judging panel and the Parktown Quarter franchisee said: “The flavours and textures were sublime, you could almost say they were up to the Simply Asia standard.”

Simply Asia will be hosting the Ready Steady Wok Grand Final at their Fourways store on 8 April 2017, where the three semi-finalists, Chris Forrest, DJ Soosh and Innocentia Makapila, will compete for the title of Ultimate Wok Star as well as the grand prize of a Thai banquet for eight people prepared by their own Thai chef (courtesy of Simply Asia).
