At the start of the year, most of us have an idea of where we would like to be by the end of the year, however not all of us know how to get there.

With the new year here, most of us have resolved to take better care of ourselves. Our resolutions may include, going back to the gym, watching what we eat, spending more time with loved ones, or focusing more on building a career. While making resolutions is great, often by the end of the year we find that we had bitten off a bit more than we can chew. We want to always go above and beyond and be the best version of ourselves, however life gets overwhelming at times.

Dr Hjira Skaal, owner of Fitness Junction shares her tips on how to set health and wellness goals that are both uplifting and attainable. “My career started in health as a physiotherapist but within three years of practising I knew I wanted to focus on wellness instead of illness,” she says. “I then studied further into Sport and Recreation Management. Following my Masters Degree in Public Health, my passion for wellness grew even further and I started conceptualising a space where health and wellness would seamlessly come together. This was the birth of Fitness Junction, a gym with a holistic approach to health and wellness; where gym facilities meet health and wellness solutions.” She adds.

It is important to note that the dynamics of our lives are interconnected, and when it comes to setting goals, we need to consider all these factors, from what we eat to our mindset and the company we keep; pay attention to these factors when setting goals. Here’s Dr Skaal’s tips on ensuring that by the end of the year, all your boxes are ticked and you are still motivated to set more goals next year:

  1. Set Clear Goals

The first step is to ensure that your objectives are as clear as possible. Do not be vague about what you want to achieve and by when. Be very specific.

  1. Draw Up A Plan

Once you know what you would like to achieve, be clear on how you will reach these goals. Do thorough research, find out what steps are required to get to your end goal.

  1. Set Timelines

Remember, some goals might need more than a year to reach, with these kinds; decide where you want to be by the end of this year and continue to phase two of the plan in the next year.

  1. Just Do It

Once you have determined step one to three, start! Commit and just go for it!

Dr Skaal knows a thing or two about just doing it, she describes herself as a very passionate person. “I make sure I do everything to the best of my ability, hence in my quest to being a wellness expert I completed a Ph.D. in Human Movement Science at the North West University. After this, I still felt that I need business skills and as a result, I completed a Social Entrepreneurship Programme at GIBS,” she comments. With these qualifications, life and business experience Dr Skaal aims to set up gyms in townships and small towns in South Africa, bringing the health and wellness gospel to those who may not be able to afford the best health and medical services.
