AVOCADO

Not only is it my favourite fruit, but avocado also promotes hair growth because it is rich in Vitamin B, which is essential to healthy hair, as well as Vitamin E, which heals and repairs damaged hair and scalp. As a natural moisturiser, avocados are rich in protein and the ‘good fats’ keep split ends and breakage at bay. They keep your hair strong, soft and shiny.

Mixing method: Take out your blender and mix an avocado with a ripe banana and EVOO for a deep conditioning treatment. Your hair will be grateful.

BANANAS

We already know that bananas are rich in potassium but they are also contains Vitamins A, C and E, which are all vital for healthy hair growth.

Mixing method: Mash the banana up to a smooth, pasty consistency – no chunks – and use alone or combine with your favourite oil, like virgin olive oil or sweet almond oil, for a moisturising hair mask. Make sure to shampoo afterwards. On a high note, bananas are also great for treating dry, itchy scalps.

EGGS

By now we all know that hair is made up mostly of a protein called keratin. Therefore, egg protein can temporarily repair any weak spots in your strands to help strengthen your hair overall. Vitamins A, D and E plus fatty acids help when it comes to preventing breakage and hair loss, while adding moisture and shine.

Mixing method: Break an egg into a bowl and mix with three teaspoons of olive oil. Comb your hair first and then apply to your scalp and on your hair, for lustre and shine. Egg extracts and olive oil will boost hair strength and prevent hair loss.

MAYONNAISE

I can’t eat a sandwich without mayonnaise, so it’s only natural that I added it to my list. Mayonnaise has it all: vinegar to help balance the pH to your hair; egg protein to strengthen your hair, and the oils for condition and shine.

The method: Work a generous amount into your strands and top it with a plastic cap for about 30 minutes. Rinse well, shampoo and you’re good to go.

HONEY

Honey is known as a natural humectant, meaning it can retain and preserve moisture. It is a great conditioner and moisturiser because of its ability to attract and retain water molecules. It is also a natural emollient, making it a good hair-softening component. Honey will leave your hair looking shinier, feeling softer and full of body – plus, it’s full of enriching vitamins and minerals. 

Mixing method: Mix with banana and olive oil for a deep conditioning treatment or use as rinse in the final step of your wash routine. Add one teaspoon of honey to about four cups of warm water.

Extra virgin olive oil can be a deep conditioner, a sealant, a hot-oil treatment, and a perfect addition to any conditioner. This emollient takes the honours!
