10 Ways You #GetGoing Without Even Knowing

There are many more ways to reap the rewards of exercise than early morning jogs, daily trips to the gym, an obscene number of sit-ups or dragging yourself to an aerobics class at the crack of dawn.

TomTom has started its new #GetGoing movement to get you going while you’re out living and enjoying your everyday life. Here are some unlikely movements that have a bigger impact than you might realise:

  1. Spending time with the kids

You may not realise it, but all that time you spend carrying them around on your hip, chasing after them at bath time or simply playing outside together has a positive impact on your fitness.

  1. Cooking up a storm

The time you spend in the kitchen is a great opportunity to reach step goals for the day. Imagine a line that maps your movement as you make your way from the fridge to the counter, then to the stove and back again – it doesn’t seem like much, but it certainly makes a difference.

  1. Tidying up around the house

That feeling of exhaustion and sense of achievement that you get once you’re done with a thorough spring clean shouldn’t go unnoticed. You don’t have to be running a 10-km marathon to achieve similar results. Simply cleaning up around the house has its benefits too.

  1. Moving your body to the beat

Dance! Whether on a night out with friends or just at home, it’s not only fun and freeing, but it’s also good for your health and wellbeing too.

  1. Laughing to your heart’s content

Studies have found that an hour’s worth of laughter can burn as many calories as a 30-minute toning session at the gym. Laughing engages the abdominal and facial muscles, and releases dopamine and endorphins in the body.

  1. Getting enough sleep

The more shut-eye you get, the more calories your body is able to burn even while you sleep – and the more you’re able to carpe that diem the following day. Adults should be getting at least eight hours of sleep a night to avoid groggy mornings that kill the motivation to get up and going.

  1. Meditating

Before you get too excited at the prospect of being a couch potato for the rest of your days, it’s important to understand that meditation involves active awareness of the mind and body in order to clear the mind and find calmness. This promotes weight loss, because you become more mindful of your body’s needs in the process, encouraging a positive approach to health and fitness. 

  1. Catching up with friends

Those spur-of-the-moment catch-ups with friends are great for the soul and even better for reaching a daily step goal, particularly if you tend to meet for a walk on the beach or even at the mall for a quick window-shopping session. While your heart rate may not be spiking, you’re still being active and that totally counts.

  1. Taking the scenic route

The decision to ditch the crowded, stuffy lift and take the stairs instead did you a world of good. Climbing a couple flights of stairs will get the blood circulating and even helps strengthen a few muscles in the process. Not being able to find a parking spot close to the entrance of the supermarket is also better for you than you’d like to admit, and is just another way you’re including movement in everyday life.

  1. Grabbing a bite to eat

Yes, popping by your favourite smoothie or coffee place for a quick fix also counts towards going the distance for fitness. Believe it or not, even the action of eating promotes weight loss, depending on the types of food and the time of day you’re eating.

Going for a run has obvious merits, but the #GetGoing campaign sets out to shed light on how fitness can be an established part of your everyday lives. This means that everyone, from the fitness fanatics to the exercise-averse, are already on the right track – all you need to do is take that next important step to #GetGoing.
